What to Bring to College: The Essentials

If you’re unsure of what to bring to college, here are some ideas of what you might have forgotten...

1. Wall decor

You may get homesick in the first couple days of college, and want to look at something that reminds you of home, so print out a few pictures to hang up! Plus, the walls are really empty, and decorations are a nice way to spruce up your room.

2. A step stool

I’m 5’3”, and these beds are pretty high up… getting a step stool is a lot more efficient than the run-and-jump technique to get on to your bed.

3. An ottoman

If you have room for one, some ottomans are really cute and they help as extra storage.

4. Snacks

We have #1 dining for a reason. But if it’s late and you’re not in the mood to walk to a dining hall, pack some snacks in a drawer.

5. Shower shoes

The thought of communal showers can be gross. Keep your feet clean.

6. A speaker

Speakers are nice to have if you like listening to music while you do homework or relax. But don’t play your music too loud! You don’t want to be a rude neighbor.

7. Earplugs

I’m a really light sleeper, so sometimes I use earplugs to drown outside noises. They work like a charm.

8. Drying rack

Not everything can be put in the dryer. Having the rack is a really nice substitute to dangling clothes around your room.

9. Portable charger

At such a big campus, it’s nice to be able to charge your phone when you’re walking from class to class. Phones can die pretty quickly!

10. Sewing kit

A sewing kit can be really helpful for small rips and tears in your clothes. It’s a good trick to learn to how to sew before college.

11. Swiffer

My grandmother bought me a Swiffer, and it’s my new best friend. The floors accumulate more dirt than you notice and Swiffers pack away nicely.

12. Stain remover stick

It’s college. You’re going to stain some of your stuff, and if you don’t know how to remove it without the help of a parent, a Tide stick will do the trick.

13. Extension cord

If your room doesn’t have enough outlets, get an extension cord with outlets to suffice!
