University Costs

UMass Amherst tuition, fees, food and housing rates are established each summer for the following academic year.

There may be additional charges not reflected below that appear on your university bill. These additional fees may be based on the student's career, level and program which are not included in the Financial Aid standard Cost of Attendance.

The Student Health Benefit Plan required by Massachusetts state law is not included. This fee may be waived if your health insurance meets the Massachusetts state requirements. Visit University Health Services for details.

For detailed information about fees and tuition visit the Bursar's Office.

2023-2024 Tuition and Fees

Your initial student bill will include the cost of an unlimited food plan which is included in the costs below. There are several housing and food plan options from which to choose. See the Bursar’s Office website for more information.

Housing: Per the US Department of Education, the housing amount used is equal to the greater of the average or the median room charge. Many first-year students will spend less on their housing choice. Visit the Residential Life website to see additional housing choices.

Food: All first-year students are automatically assigned to the Unlimited 250 Meal Plan. Once the bill is posted, students may change their meal plan. For a full breakdown of food plan options visit Dining Services.

Certain international students may qualify for in-state tuition, depending on their visa type.  Examples include:
- dependent students on H-4 visas, whose parents have been residing and working in Massachusetts for a year or more;
- students who have received Deferred Status through the Obama initiative.
International students on student visas will not qualify for in-state tuition. International students will be considered out-of-state for tuition residency purposes; they must contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office and provide appropriate visa documentation in order to initiate a residency reclassification review.
For more detailed information about tuition residency, contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office at 413-545-0222 or visit our Residency Policy.

**New England Regional Students Program (NERSP) gives a tuition break to New England residents enrolled in certain programs not offered by the public colleges and universities of their home state. Your bill will reflect the full cost of out-of-state tuition and fees and either the New England regional discount or, for those who are eligible, the out-of-state merit award. Students receive either the regional discount or the merit award, but not both. Learn more about the Tuition Break program.
