5 Places to Study That Aren't the Library

Although UMass is fortunate to be home to the tallest research library on any college campus, if you’re anything like me, you can only study in a library for a minimal amount of time before getting distracted. Luckily, I've scoped out five underrated places on campus that are equally as great for studying... or just relaxing and spending time with your friends!

1. John Olver Design Building Rooftop (Pictured)

This scenic rooftop deck is a nice place to relax and enjoy the view. Located at the top of the John Olver Design Building, it is generally quiet — perfect for studying or simply relaxing by yourself. While it is outside and while the weather is getting colder, it’s definitely still worth layering on a jacket to surround yourself with such an aesthetically pleasing ambience!

2. Integrative Learning Center

A slightly more populated option, the ILC is a great way to be around people while still studying. Complete with tables, big couches, and high top counter seats, the ILC has a modern setting, and everyone seems so focused all the time. It’s a really nice environment to do work in between classes. The ILC is home to multiple College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) majors so it’s also a great outlet for resources if you need help. Peet’s Coffee is located on the ground level if you need a caffeine boost as well!

3. The Greenhouse

Located across from University Health Services and next to Franklin Dining Hall, the entire Greenhouse area, both inside and out, consists of beautiful decor and is maintained by members of the UMass community. It is an extremely scenic and relaxing place to even just walk around. You can sit on the outside benches to finish some homework or just appreciate your surroundings with a friend. Nonetheless, being around the beautiful plants and flowers grown by our own students and staff will lighten up any mood, guaranteed.

4. Courtside Cafe

A more uplifting and motivational option, the Courtside Cafe has a vibrant energy that will encourage you to get work done and maybe even go for a workout after! Located in the Rec Center, there are many seating options and a menu full of healthy choices to snack on while doing your work!

5. Your Residence Hall Lounge

The residence halls at UMass all have at least one big lounge area, complete with comfortable seating and other amenities. Many students use the lounge as a place to study, socialize, and watch a Pats game — or two. It’s a great way to familiarize yourself with your fellow classmates and peers. In my freshman year, I went to the lounge in my building to fill up my water bottle, and that’s where I ended up meeting my best friend. At college, you’re always meeting new people, especially on a big campus like UMass. What better way than to start with than where you live?
