What to Do in Amherst

Students enjoy snacks in Amherst Massachusetts — There are so many restaurants in downtown Amherst to explore!

As a University of Massachusetts student, I've done my fair share of exploring nearby areas! If you ever find yourself wanting to escape campus for the day, here are some ideas for what you can do in Amherst:

EAT!

Downtown Amherst is full of cute little cafés and restaurants. With so many options to choose from, eating in Amherst is made perfectly for everyone’s liking. You can go to Judie’s, home of the popover, or buy pizza by the slice at the famous Antonio’s Pizza. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, you can get a treat (or a dozen) at Insomnia Cookies, or get them delivered right to your door at 3 a.m. if you are having a midnight craving. With plenty of food choices in Amherst, you definitely won’t go hungry when you visit.

Go on a Hike

Hike one of the many mountain trails the area has to offer to overlook the scenic Pioneer Valley. Feel free to visit Amethyst Brook or venture to Mount Holyoke Range State Park to catch a glimpse of the beautiful setting. With the fall colors coming in season, there is no better time to visit the picturesque mountainside of the Pioneer Valley than now.

Visit One of the Many Farmers’ Markets

Western Mass has a lot of farmland, which makes for great farmers’ markets! There are all sorts of farms and local businesses participating in weekly markets in downtown Amherst and surrounding town — where you can find fresh produce and meet amazing vendors. Being in a small community, visiting a farmers’ market is a really great way to familiarize yourself with your Amherst neighbors!

See a Movie

Amherst is home to Amherst Cinema, a small theater where you can see independently-made films. This can be a really cool outing with friends, or something for a class, or just for your own merriment. You definitely have the chance to expand your appreciation for all things cinematic by seeing a movie here!

Take a Swim

If you’re ever in the mood for a quick dip in the Amherst area, visit Puffer’s Pond! The pond is just a short distance from the UMass Amherst campus, and is a beautiful lake where lots of students spend their time in the warmer weather. You can walk around, sit lakeside with a picnic, or go for a swim. Even if you don’t feel like getting in the water, the liveliness of the nature is great ambience!
