There's a Club for Everyone at UMass

In college, some of the biggest concerns of any new student are making new friends, setting yourself up for a career, and finding yourself. At the University of Massachusetts, joining clubs and other extracurricular organizations helps students get on the right track and improve their college experience in regard to all three of these goals.

If you are looking for a way to make new friends, there are endless choices of registered student organizations based around hobbies. One of the most popular of these is the UMass Outing Club. Founded all the way back in 1954, the Outing Club guides students on expeditions in the beautiful and spacious wilderness of Western Massachusetts. Whether you are a fan of hiking, skiing, or climbing, there is a place for you in the Outing Club. There are also student organizations for all kinds of other hobbies, including cooking, reading, and even beekeeping.

Another outlet for those seeking community would be one of the many cultural organizations that have a strong presence on campus. There are 50 clubs and organizations offered for various cultural identities. Whatever your race, religion, or language may be, there is a cultural organization that would be happy to have you. It is also important to understand that even if you do not identify yourself as a member of the culture a club represents, you can still participate in all events and even hold positions on the executive board.

If you are more concerned about boosting your professional prospects, there are many clubs to attend. Whatever major or career you are interested in, there is likely a club for it. In these clubs, students work together to practice the necessary skills to find a job in today’s competitive market along with hosting recruiters from prestigious companies, giving students a personal networking opportunity. Additionally, students can fill out their resumes with leadership positions like the Student Government Association and service opportunities such as Big Brother/Big Sister of UMass

This is only a small sample of all the specialized, tight-knit communities that come with a large state university like UMass Amherst. Odds are, whatever you are passionate about, at a school like this with so many bright young minds, you will not be alone.
