The Exploratory Track: What is it?

One of the things unique to the University of Massachusetts is that instead of just having an “undecided” program, the University lets you join the following “Exploratory Tracks”:

  1. Computing and Informatics (invitation only)
  2. Education
  3. Humanities and Fine Arts
  4. Natural Sciences
  5. Public Health and Health Sciences
  6. Social and Behavioral Sciences
  7. Interdisciplinary

Within each school/college are their respective majors, minors, and certificates. If you don’t have a specific major chose, then you are on the Exploratory Track. I’m a member of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS), where I'm majoring in Communication and Journalism. SBS is also home to EconomicsSociologyLegal Studies, and several other degrees. From here you can also minor in classes where it’s allowed, and get certificates through specific courses.

From here, a student would take classes toward a specific major, or classes in general fields that they could potentially find interesting without having a declared program to be in. If you’re someone who doesn’t know what they want to be, but has a general idea of what studies you’re interested in, the Exploratory Track is perfect for you. If you are on the Exploratory Track in a specific college but would like to change to a different program, UMass Amherst will allow you to do so. Applying into a specific college is not binding.

Although transferring majors within the college you are in is technically easier to do than between different colleges, the school still prioritizes your happiness with your degree and will help you find what’s a good fit for you.
