UMass Fun Facts!

College tours tend to seem redundant after a while, especially if you go on a lot of them. The tour guide will routinely share a generic fact about the school paired with some “secret” the campus has. These tours are meant to make the school seem unique, but as cheesy as it sounds, every campus truly is unique. Here are some fun facts unique to the University of Massachusetts that give us all the bragging rights we want.

1. We are #1 in the country for hockey

The “sleeping giant” has awoken, and we recently topped the nation in hockey, according to U.S. College Hockey Online. This means a lot of school pride, fun athletic events, and a whole lot of bragging.

2. Du Bois is the tallest research library on any college campus in the country

And the second tallest library in the world. It's 28 stories tall and home to thousands of useful resources for any subject. Take advantage of this while you can! Du Bois has books (duh), tutors, study rooms, rental film equipment, food, and so much more!

3. Your entire application is considered

When you apply to UMass, your application is viewed on holistically. This means your application is looked at beyond just your test scores, as the Office of Undergraduate Admissions aims to diversify the student body as much as possible. The admissions staff takes every aspect of your application into consideration before making a decision, including grades, your essay, extracurriculars, and more. Part of what makes UMass unique is the variety of students; you’re more than just a number here!

4. The Class of 2022 is the most diverse class yet

UMass has made huge strides over the last decade to increase diversity! But not just diversity of ethnicity. UMass also wants to increase diversity of thought. UMass wants a variety of students who will challenge each other in the classroom. The male/female percentage for the Class of '22 was 50/50, minority groups account for 32% of the student population, and the class was the most academically accomplished class in school history.

5. We are #1 in the country for dining

This fact is overstated but it’s very true -- there’s a ton of five-star food options for every palatearound campus. You definitely won’t go hungry here.
