Let’s face it. College is expensive. However, there are several ways to cut down on expenses, whether it be via scholarships, loans, or working. Luckily, UMass understands the challenges families sometimes face and provides plenty of resources on campus to help students cover these costs.

UMass provides a payment plan system if you are unable to provide for the costs in-full for the semester, where you can pay back tuition in installments. You can pay for these plans, either semesterly or yearly, through the UMass Office of Financial Aid. You can also apply for scholarships both through UMass or from outside donors and also explore taking out loans as a payment option.

UMass Financial Aid Services provide excellent ways to discuss paying for tuition.  

With walk-in counseling, or scheduled appointments in person or by phone, students and families can sit with counselors to learn all of their financial aid options. 

Counselors within Financial Aid Services will provide you with tips on where to look for scholarships. For example, they advise that you look locally for scholarship money, such as from high school guidance offices, churches, clubs, or employers. You are more likely, according to UMass financial aid counselors, be given a scholarship if you remind the donor of him or herself. While merit is important in looking for scholarship money, it’s not the only important aspect. So, get involved with your community, write a good essay, and keep your grades up (UMass financial aid services can help you do all of the above). There is also a scholarship search tool you can find on the UMass Financial Aid website that gives applications for on and off-campus scholarships.

In essence, it is important to utilize the plethora of resources offered at UMass to help you pay for tuition. Be sure to always check Spire to stay up to date with documents you may have due, fill out FAFSA in order to be able to receive financial aid, and apply for a variety of awards (even if you don’t know if you’ll receive it). Most importantly, always ask for help if you’re unsure of how to plan for paying tuition bills. UMass knows college is expensive and wants you to be here, and they will do their best to help you meet your college tuition needs.
