How UMass Amherst Chose Me: Coming to College as an Out of State Student

Whether you decide to venture 15 minutes or 15 hours away from home, the transition from high school to college is monumental and you will be met with a unique set of challenges. Here is the story of why I decided to move all the way from Dallas, Texas to attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
My Connection to the Northeast
The college decision may seem daunting, you may consider a small or large school, public or private, and likely most importantly, location. In my case, I chose to return to the Northeast, my original home. I was born in Connecticut, but moved to Texas when I was ten years old. I have such fond memories of crisp autumns and beautiful snowy holiday seasons, trips to New York in the summer, and Vermont in the winter. So when it came time to create a lineup of universities I mainly chose those located in the North, and I in fact did not apply to any school within Texas. UMass Amherst was in good company with the other schools I applied to; but what ultimately made me choose UMass Amherst over others….the answer is UMass chose me. The near constant stream of virtual communication was a testament to the effort and importance the university places on their student admissions. When I visited campus, I immediately felt welcomed. I loved looking over the campus pond at people laying in the grass contently reading, and students in the cafes studying and chatting. I saw myself in the future as one of them.

What I'm Learning at UMass Amherst
Now, realistically, it is easier said than done to simply choose a college based on a “feeling”, so to back that up...the University of Massachusetts is one of the top institutions in the nation, and offers a plethora of academic and career-focused opportunities no matter the major. Throughout high school, I owned and operated my own catering business, Tara’s Tasty Table. My business was born out of a love for cooking but grew into a passion for service and entrepreneurship. As the time to apply for college drew closer, it became clear that nothing would benefit me more than a degree in hospitality and tourism management (HTM). The HTM program is recognized as one of the best programs in the nation, and it's part of the Isenberg School of Management, which is an internationally accredited business school. During my time here I know I will become knowledgeable of the hospitality industry, gain solid management experience, connect with peers, alumni, and professionals, and be challenged to widen my perspectives on business.
My ultimate goals of college are to learn more about myself, hone in on my career path, foster habits for success, and have fun! Although I am far away from home, the world is a small place, and I know that my friends and family are rooting for me no matter the distance.
If you have been dreaming about a college, in the perfect location, which may just be a bit further away, think of UMass and take this amazing opportunity in your life. Push your boundaries, it’s worth it!
