Information for Student Job Seekers

Use common sense when applying for and engaging in off-campus employment. If a potential employer asks you to participate in an activity that makes you uncomfortable, or asks you to deposit funds and/or send them money, do not do it. Review the Student Employment Office Job Scams page to become an informed job seeker.

Students interested in PAID, tutoring, child care, and other positions offered by private families in their homes during this time must be aware of the risks associated with COVID-19 and be personally responsible for minimizing these risks and are encouraged to adhere to federal, state and local guidelines and regulations. As these positions are offered by private families and entities, UMass Amherst is not liable or responsible for any outcomes or situations that arise from participating in any of these opportunities.

PLEASE NOTE: Be wary of "check cashing scams." If someone asks you to deposit a check/money order into your personal account and send money to another individual, you should refuse and contact our office immediately.

Please read the January 2017 Public Service Announcement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding an employment scam targeting college students.

DISCLAIMER:
Student Employment at UMass Amherst acts only as a referral service. We make no recommendations or guarantees about the positions and employers listed through our office. In addition, Student Employment is not responsible for the safety, wages, working conditions, or other aspects of off-campus employment. Due to the volume of jobs received by Student Employment, we are unable to research the integrity of every position listed. Therefore, students are urged to take on this responsibility themselves. We encourage you to use common sense and caution when applying for positions, especially when applying for positions off-campus.

Federal Work-Study

Students with Federal Work-Study awards will earn money only if they are employed with the University, based on the hours worked and paid via direct deposit paycheck on a bi-weekly basis. The only way to access funds from a Federal Work-Study award is through earnings for hours worked. You can search for available positions on our job board, using the work-study filter.

International Students

If you are an international student on a UMass student visa your employment options are highly restricted. Please contact the International Programs Office for guidance and further information.
