Student Employment and COVID-19

Students with federal work-study who are interested in pursuing University work for the academic year will be allowed to work remotely, as long as the job tasks can be performed remotely, and there is documented supervision. If you have been hired for the fall semester and are a first-time University employee, click here for the University hiring documents.
Students with Federal Work-Study awards will earn money only if they are employed with the University, based on the hours worked and paid via direct deposit paycheck on a bi-weekly basis. The only way to access funds from a Federal Work-Study award is through earnings for hours worked.
Information for Student Job Seekers
Use common sense when applying for and engaging in off-campus employment. If a potential employer asks you to participate in an activity that makes you uncomfortable in any way, don't do it. Review the Student Employment Office Job Scams page to become an informed job seeker.
Students interested in PAID, tutoring, child care, and other positions offered by private families in their homes during this time must be aware of the risks associated with COVID-19 and be personally responsible for minimizing these risks and are encouraged to adhere to federal, state and local guidelines and regulations. As these positions are offered by private families and entities, UMass Amherst is not liable or responsible for any outcomes or situations that arise from participating in any of these opportunities.
PLEASE NOTE: Be wary of "check cashing scams." If someone asks you to deposit a check/money order into your personal account and send money to another individual, you should refuse and contact our office immediately.

Graduate Student Jobs
Most graduate students at UMass Amherst are hired through the appointment process as teaching assistants, research assistants, or interns. Your best option for finding a teaching or research assistantship is to contact your academic department. In certain cases, departments hire graduate students on an hourly basis. This type of job and the associated pay rate must be pre-approved by the Graduate Assistantship Office before you may begin your employment.
