My Summer Recap

Like always, the last days of August begin to creep up on me sooner than expected and summer is beginning to come to a close. As my senior year at the University of Massachusetts Amherst quickly approaches, I thought I’d take the time to look back at my last summer as a college student.

As the world began to slowly open back up from a year of lockdowns, I was able to do some pretty cool things. I could go on trips, I completed a 12 week in-person internship, and I did lots of catching up with friends and family.

My Internship Experience

One of the most important things that I was able to do this summer was complete my first summer internship. When I got the phone call in May that I had been selected for a digital marketing internship at a company near my hometown I was beyond excited. After months of applying and countless rejections, I was so relieved that I had finally been hired.

I was also super excited that I would be able to work in-person in their office, and would not have to be completing the internship from home. The internship was a great experience, and I was able to use what I had learned in school and through other part-time internships at this one.

Since this was a digital marketing internship, my main task throughout the summer was to maintain and bring to life the company’s social media. I established a content calendar and each week I was in charge of posting videos and content to Instagram and Facebook. I also worked on employee spotlight videos, and on other marketing tasks as needed.

Although I worked on social, I also spent time at my internship working on the company’s website, creating marketing materials like graphics and catalogs, and experiencing what working in an office environment was like for the first time.

Throughout the summer, I was able to utilize many skills I learned from being a student at UMass. I created surveys which I learned how to do in my Marketing Research class. I also used social media management techniques from my Social Media Marketing and Analytics class — as well as from this internship with the Admissions Office. Another useful skill was being able to use Excel, which I learned in my Operations and Information Management classes!

This internship has prepared me for my search for a full time job after college during this school year and I’m very grateful for the experience.

Visiting Amherst

Another awesome part about this summer was being able to visit Amherst, since I was living at home this summer. I'm a senior at UMass and have an off-campus apartment with friends — which means we were able to visit Amherst this summer and stay in our apartment.

A bunch of my friends stayed in Amherst throughout the summer for work, so it was great to be able to spend the weekend in Amherst when we wanted to visit them. There are a lot of perks of living both on and off-campus, but one big perk to living off-campus was being able to visit Amherst and walk around our beautiful campus in the summertime. I had never been able to do this before because I had been living on campus, and it was a lot of fun!

Travel

After a long year of COVID-19 lockdowns, this summer after getting my COVID-19 vaccine I was able to go on some really fun trips with my family and friends! I was able to go to Cape Cod, to Maine, and even camping in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. This had been my first time camping in a tent since I was really young, so I was super excited and it was a super fun experience. I was so happy to be able to travel again and explore new places. Check out some photos from my travels below!
