AFSCME Unit B Paid Leave Accruals

UMass Amherst staff members in positions covered by the university's collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Unit B  are eligible for the following types of paid time.

The most common types of paid leave are outlined below. Please reference the CBA for more information and additional detail.

A full-time employee (scheduled to work 40 hours per week) who is a member in good standing receives 40 hours of paid leave every year commencing with the Sunday at the start of the fall academic term. Employees on a part-time schedule (15 or more hours) are awarded paid leave on a pro-rated basis.

Employees who start (their first year of employment or experienced a break in service of more than one academic semester) after the Sunday at the start of the fall academic term) and employees whose scheduled workweek is less than forty hours shall receive the time calculated at one hour earned for every thirty hours worked, up to a maximum of forty hours per year.

Leave may be taken with a minimum of twenty four hour advance notice and approval from the immediate supervisor/ designee.

Unused time may be paid at the end of the academic spring semester of each year or before the start of the next fall academic term while the employee is actively employed. Such notice to do so shall be given to the administrator of the department in which the employee works, on a form specified by the employer in the last paid period for which the
employee is actively on payroll. In the event an employee fails to request the use of this time, up to 40 hours may be carried over to the following year. The maximum balance an employee may carry shall be limited to 80 hours.
