HR Direct Sex Marker

Sex

UMass Amherst employees can designate their sex in HR Direct as female, male or X. UMass Human Resources does not require documentation of an employee's sex.

Benefited employees: the MA Group Insurance Commission (GIC) and their health insurance companies require a binary sex in their software systems. The GIC will contact you directly to obtain a binary sex if you indicate in HR Direct that your sex is X.

Legal sex

Legal sex refers to the sex marker on a person’s identification document/s (eg, birth certificate, driver’s license, state ID).

Massachusetts allows individuals to select X as the sex marker on their driver's licenses.

Updating one's sex marker in HR Direct does not update legal records. Resources for those who wish to update their legal sex include:

  • Changing legal name, birth certificate and driver’s license in Massachusetts
  • Amending sex identification on a Social Security record
  • Selecting sex marker on a US Passport
