Retirement

Employees of the Commonwealth do not contribute to the federal Social Security system but do pay Medicare taxes. 

  • USA/MTA-covered employees are required to contribute 9% of regular compensation up to $30,000 and 11% of regular compensation above $30,000 MA State Employees' Retirement System (MSERS; mandatory pension/defined benefit program)

  • At any time employees may elect to contribute to a voluntary retirement plan (University 403b and Commonwealth 457b/SMART plans)
