AFSCME Extension of Sick Leave
The AFSCME Extension of Sick Leave (AESL) program provides AFSCME members full income replacement while on approved leave of absence resulting from their own, non-work-related illness or injury and where income is not provided from another source.
Eligibility
To be eligible a member must have been employed by the university for a minimum of 12 consecutive months. AESL can be approved to replace income starting on the 6th workday of absence after the member has exhausted all of their own accrued sick, vacation and personal time.
Please refer to the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement for full details.
Please note:
- A member must be 'off payroll' for 5 workdays after exhausting all accrued sick, vacation and personal time before drawing income from AESL. AESL benefits can be approved to start the 6th workday after exhaustion of accruals outlined above.
- No sick or vacation time accrues to members while drawing income from AESL.
- Labor Relations requires exhaustion of AFSCME Sick Leave Bank benefits prior to approval of AESL.
Application process
- Prior to, or concurrent with, requesting AESL an employee must secure an approved leave of absence from their job. The Leave Request Process webpage provides instructions.
- To request income an AFSCME member must submit a completed Request for Extension of Sick Leave Form to Labor Relations with a statement from their treating physician indicating the nature of the illness prohibiting performance of work and a medically expected return to work date.
A Labor Relations representative will respond to the applicant. If income replacement is approved time and labor instructions will also be shared with the member's employing department and the Payroll team.
