Pharmacy

To transfer prescriptions to UHS Pharmacy, call (413) 577-5030 and give us the following info:

• Your first and last name and date of birth
• Name of pharmacy and where your prescription is located
• Pharmacy address (town and state)
• Pharmacy phone number
• List of medications (prescriptions) you wish to transfer

We accept many insurances, and transferring prescriptions does not change your copay.

If you have refills remaining:

• Phone: Call (413) 577-5030; refills will be ready the next business day.
• Online: Complete our Online Prescription Refills form.
• Mail: We may be able to mail your refill to you; call (413) 577-5030 to ask the pharmacist if your prescription qualifies. A $2.25-per-prescription fee applies.

If you do not have refills available:

• Established patients renewing medication prescribed by a UHS provider: Submit the Request Form for Prescription Renewal on the patient portal. Login to the portal and go to UHS Medical Providers > Forms (pencil icon) to submit the form.
• Other patients: Contact your provider for a prescription. You can request that your prescription be filled at UHS Pharmacy; provide our address and phone number: 150 Infirmary Way, Amherst, MA, 01003; (413) 577-5030.

First, speak with your home healthcare provider to let them know you want to transfer care to UHS while you are at school. Then call (413) 577-5101 to make an appointment with a UHS provider for medication management. You can browse our providers' profiles to choose a provider ahead of time, or our staff will help you select one. Your UHS provider or a UHS nurse will determine whether we need any of your medical records.

Emergency Contraception

• If your contraception fails or you have unprotected sex and are worried about pregnancy, you can get low-cost emergency contraception (EC) at UHS.
• The earlier EC is taken, the more effective it is.
• Plan B One-Step is a type of EC available at UHS. To help prevent unintended pregnancy, take a single dose within 3 days (72 hours) of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
• Plan B is available at UHS Pharmacy and Walk-In Clinic. No prescription or ID is necessary.

Prescription Contraception

• If you're thinking about starting oral contraceptives, make an appointment with one of our providers. Call (413) 577-5101 for general medicine clinic appointments, or (413) 577-6511 for an appointment in Sexual & Reproductive Health Clinic.
• Other forms of birth control available at UHS include IUDs, implants and diaphragms.
• If you're already taking an oral contraceptive, you can fill your prescription at the UHS Pharmacy. See the "How To" section above to transfer your prescription.

Barrier Methods

• Use a barrier method of protection correctly each time you're sexually active – including vaginal, anal and oral sex.
• Condoms and spermicide can be purchased at UHS Pharmacy.

If you're HIV-negative but at high risk, or if you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, medications known as PrEP and PEP can reduce your chances of becoming infected with HIV. Call (413) 577-5101 to make an appointment with a UHS provider who can help determine if PrEP or PEP is right for you.

Naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan, is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. Naloxone rescue kits are available at UHS Pharmacy with or without prescriptions. There are two ways to get a naloxone rescue kit from UHS Pharmacy:

1. Obtain a prescription from your healthcare provider and have it filled at UHS Pharmacy. We can dispense it and bill your insurance, like we would for any other prescription.
2. Come directly to UHS Pharmacy and request a naloxone kit. A prescription from your doctor is not needed. The Department of Public Health (DPH) has issued a statewide standing order (PDF) that allows retail pharmacies to dispense naloxone without a prescription.
   • MassHealth covers the cost of naloxone for members, as do many other insurers.

Call or visit UHS Pharmacy to find out more. When you go to the pharmacy to get a rescue kit under the standing order, all you need is your insurance card and preferred payment method.

When at the pharmacy, tell the pharmacist or pharmacy tech you want naloxone. Ask about the cost or co-pay before they fill the order. Insurance coverage and co-pay costs vary. Keep in mind that generic formulations tend to be less expensive for consumers that are paying out-of-pocket. You should then be given a naloxone rescue kit, your insurance will be billed, and you will pay any co-pay costs.

If you use injectable medications, it's important to discard used sharps safely. The UHS Pharmacy has low-cost sharps containers; when the box is full, bring it back to the pharmacy for free disposal.

If you fill your UHS prescriptions at a pharmacy other than the UHS Pharmacy, call the UHS Appointment Line, (413) 577-5101, for refills.

• Refill requests from your pharmacy cannot be accepted.
• Allow at least two working days for refills.
• Controlled substances cannot be refilled on weekends.
