UHS Eye Care & Optical Services is your one-stop source for high-quality, personalized, affordable vision care. We serve students, faculty and staff of the Five Colleges: UMass Amherst, Hampshire College, Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College and Smith College.

Eye exams are by appointment only. Contact us at (413) 577-3937 for eye care appointments, contact lens orders, record requests, or any other needs. For assistance with glasses, call Optical Services: (413) 577-5007.

Ways to Pay

Eye Exams

Complete Eye Exams at UHS

Healthy eyes and good vision are an important part of your overall wellbeing. Our thorough optometric examinations can identify vision problems, eye diseases and other abnormalities. Exams include:

  • health history review
  • visual acuity test
  • retinal check (with pupil dilation when indicated)
  • refraction (eyeglass determination)
  • color vision test (when indicated)
  • blood pressure test (when indicated)
  • eye health consultation, including glaucoma and cataract check
  • contact lens evaluation, when indicated
  • explanation of results

Insurance

We accept Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, ConnectiCare, Fallon, Davis Vision, EyeMed, Harvard Pilgrim, Health New England, MetLife and Tufts health plans. Not all plans cover routine eye exams; check with your insurance carrier.

Contact Lenses

Contact Lenses

When you choose UHS’s Eye Care Services department for your contact lenses, you’ll benefit from comprehensive care, including: 

  • Initial evaluation 
  • Fitting, if necessary 
  • Follow-up visits
  • Ongoing monitoring and lens replacement

Our staff members have the experience and product knowledge you need. We have lenses for every vision need and lifestyle – soft, soft toric, firm gas permeable, bifocal, tinted, and disposable, including single-wear products.

How to Order Contact Lenses

Anyone with a valid prescription can order contact lenses from Eye Care Services.

Choose from one of these options:

Glasses

UHS Optical Services is here for all your eyewear needs.

We are open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To make an appointment for assistance with glasses, call us at (413) 577-5007. For eye exams, contact lenses, and appointments with our optometrist, contact Eye Care Services at (413) 577-3937.

Our skilled, licensed opticians are trained to fit you and help you select frames, lenses and other optical products prescribed by your eye doctor. We have the finest quality lenses, made with the latest technology. Thin, light lenses and all types of coatings are available.

On-Site Lens Lab

Our high-tech on-site lens lab lets you you bring in a prescription from any eye doctor, pick a frame from the many designer options available, and be seeing well and looking great in no time.

Insurance

We accept Davis Vision and Eyemed; in addition, many insurance plans offer discounts. Students receive a 10% discount on all frames and eyeglass lenses (cannot be combined with other insurance discounts). 

Your Satisfaction is Important to Us

Our follow-up care includes free adjustments and minor repairs. Frames are covered by a one-year warranty against manufacturers’ defects.
