Names & Pronouns
In your medical record, your preferred name and pronouns (pulled from SPIRE) appear in parentheses next to your legal name. Our staff are trained to check for and use your preferred name and pronouns.
If you change your preferred name and/or pronouns in SPIRE, it may take up to 24 hours for this change to be made in your medical record. Here are step-by-step instructions for updating your personal information in SPIRE.
How to Update Your Pronouns, Gender & More in the Patient Portal:
- You can update your pronouns, gender, race and ethnicity in the UMass Patient Portal.
- If you update this information in the portal, the change to your medical record is instant.
- Changes you make in the portal to these fields will not change how this information appears in SPIRE. This means that you can feel confident in the privacy of your medical record, and even make selections that differ from your educational record.
- Log in to the UMass Patient Portal
- In the main menu, click any "Get Started" button
- In the left-hand sidebar menu click My Profile (on mobile, click 3 lines to expand menu)
- Scroll down until you see demographic options
- Make any changes and click "Save"
