UMass Amherst Launches New Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Creativity Website to Bolster Student Ventures
In support of the university’s strategic goals to advance innovation, research and creative activity, UMass Amherst has launched a new Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Creativity website. The website, found at umass.edu/innovation, serves as a central hub for connecting students with resources that encourage creative problem-solving, design thinking and an entrepreneurial mindset.
The new digital resource was developed by the Marcom team in University Relations with direct input from the Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Creativity advisory council and Vice Provost for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Creativity Sundar Krishnamurty.
“I am excited about this website because it showcases the people, programs and opportunities that make innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity thrive at UMass Amherst,” Krishnamurty says. “The IE&C initiative will help students develop the skills and connections needed to transform their ideas into impact while expanding innovation, experiential learning and interdisciplinary collaboration at the university.”
The website also introduces the INNOVATE Certificate, a new 17-credit undergraduate program open to students of all majors that integrates cross-disciplinary coursework with hands-on learning opportunities.
The site’s navigation illuminates clear pathways for students to turn their ideas into meaningful ventures:
- Get Started: Connects students to residential learning communities, student clubs and organizations and other communal activities where they can develop their ideas alongside like-minded peers.
- Academics: Highlights courses, the INNOVATE certificate and summer programs from across the university where students can build a strong academic foundation for a future in entrepreneurship.
- Makerspaces: Focuses on the UMass Amherst Makerspace, the W.E.B. Du Bois Library Digital Media Lab and other creative spaces where students can access equipment to design, prototype and produce their ideas — including 3D printers, laser cutters and audio and video recording tools.
- Competitions: Details the many challenges, pitch competitions and showcases arranged by the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship and other campus organizations. Competitions like the Innovation Challenge have awarded tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to student entrepreneurs since 2018.
- Launch Your Venture: Provides guidance for students who are ready to secure business funding and take their ideas to market. This section spotlights the many successful companies in the UMass Amherst portfolio and connects aspiring entrepreneurs with mentors, investors and commercialization resources.
Throughout the site, visitors will find stories and videos of UMass Amherst students from all disciplines who are developing creative enterprises, building innovative technologies and engaging in cutting-edge research with real-world applications.
By celebrating the achievements of UMass students and elevating those stories of innovation and impact, the website reinforces the university’s reputation as a destination for talent, discovery and economic growth.
