PostDoctoral ("PD") employees who are scheduled to work at least half-time (50%) & PostDoctoral employees on a prestigious fellowship may enroll in the UMass Amherst PostDoctoral health insurance plan with 21 days of covered employment. Coverage is retroactively effective the first day of eligible employment.

PDs contribute twenty-five percent (25%) of the total premium for individual health insurance coverage; PDs contribute 20% of the total premium for health insurance providing coverage to their spouse, domestic partner and dependent child/ren under 26 years of age. PostDoctoral Health Insurance Plan Enrollment

PostDoctoral Employees may enroll in or modify health insurance coverage:

  • Effective upon date of eligible hire (enrollment must be completed within 21 calendar days of hire into an eligible position)
  • During annual open enrollment (mid-May through early June for coverage effective the following July 1). Employees may also add or remove qualified dependents during open enrollment.
  • Within 60 calendar days, and providing documentation, of a qualifying event. Qualifying events include marriage, birth/adoption, divorce/legal separation, death of covered dependent, spouse/dependent moving to the United States, involuntary loss of coverage under another plan, gain of coverage under another plan and court order. Change in coverage must be consistent with the qualifying event.

Enrollment, Premium Contributions and Required Supporting Documents

To enroll (or change coverage) complete and submit the required documents to the Human Resources Employee Service Center  within 60 calendar days of hire into a covered position or a qualifying event.

PostDoctoral employees contribute 25% of the total premium to purchase coverage under the plan. Premium is payroll-deducted pre-tax twice monthly during the month of coverage. PostDoctoral premium contributions are:
