Enroll for GIC Health Insurance Coverage (involuntary loss of other coverage)
Involuntary loss of coverage under another health insurance plan is a qualifying event for eligible employees to enroll for health insurance coverage based on UMass employment. Employees must provide documentation of the date coverage was lost and complete insurance enrollment with sixty (60) calendar days of the date coverage was lost. Documentation of relationship to dependents being enrolled for coverage is required (eg, a marriage certificate if providing coverage for a spouse, birth/adoption documentation for qualified children).
The GIC State Employee Benefits Guide provides an overview of the health insurance plans available and corresponding employee contribution toward premiums. The insurance webpage provides tips on how to select a GIC health insurance plan.
You can complete the enrollment process in any of the following ways:
- Online via the MyGIC Portal, selecting “Qualifying Events” > “Loss of Coverage” and uploading documentation of of the date coverage was involuntarily lost and documentation of relationship to any qualifying dependents for whom you wish to provide coverage.
- By requesting a link to a “GIC Enrollment/Change Form 1” be e-mailed to you via the MyGIC Link docusign process, completing the form that is e-mailed to you and uploading documentation of of the date coverage was involuntarily lost and documentation of relationship to any qualifying dependents for whom you wish to provide coverage.
- By completing a “GIC Enrollment/Change Form 1” at the Human Resources Employee Service Center. When you come to the Center please be sure to bring with you documentation of of the date coverage was involuntarily lost and documentation of relationship to any qualifying dependents for whom you wish to provide coverage.
Please note: the GIC payroll-deducts insurance premiums one month in advance of coverage (eg, generally payroll deductions in August provide for September coverage). In processing your enrollment the GIC will begin payroll-deduction of premiums prospectively and will bill you at home for any premiums that should have been payroll-deducted to-date. Timely payment of any GIC premium billed to your home is critical to maintaining coverage.
