Cancel GIC Health Insurance Coverage based on gain of other coverage
Individuals covered under a GIC health insurance plan can cancel coverage during April open enrollment for a change effective the following July 1 or within sixty (60) calendar days of a qualifying event.
Establishing health insurance coverage under another health insurance plan is a qualifying event to cancel GIC health insurance coverage. Employees must provide documentation of the date coverage was effective and submit request to cancel coverage for the GIC's receipt with sixty (60) calendar days of the date coverage under another plan was effective.
You can request cancellation of coverage in any of the following ways:
- Online via the MyGIC Portal, selecting “Qualifying Events” > “Gain of Other Coverage” and uploading documentation of of the date coverage was effective.
- By requesting a link to a “GIC Enrollment/Change Form 1” be e-mailed to you via the MyGIC Link docusign process, completing the form that is e-mailed to you and uploading documentation of of the date coverage was effective.
- By completing a “GIC Enrollment/Change Form 1” at the Human Resources Employee Service Center. When you come to the Center please be sure to bring with you documentation of of the date coverage was effective.
Please note: the GIC payroll-deducts insurance premiums one month in advance of coverage (eg, generally payroll deductions in August provide for September coverage). In processing your request the GIC may process your change effective the first day of the next month for which premium has not yet been payroll-deducted.
