The new wireless self-registration service utilizes a PIN texted to the user’s cell phone. Campus guests can select the UMASS wireless network on their device, such as a cell phone, laptop, etc., and enter their cell phone number to receive a one-week guest PIN via text. Once guests enter their PIN, they can immediately access the UMass Amherst wireless network for up to one week.

“We’re excited to offer this straightforward and secure way for campus guests to access the UMass Amherst wireless network” says Mike Dickson, UMass Amherst IT network engineer. “It’s a user-friendly solution designed to make the process easier and more efficient for our visitors.”

In addition to this new option for guests, UMass Amherst students, faculty, and staff can continue to use SPIRE to create temporary sponsored guest accounts for visitors who need access to the UMASS wireless network. Sponsored guest registration must be completed in advance though SPIRE.

The addition of this new guest wireless option will not affect UMass students, faculty, staff and other NetID users. Members of the campus community are strongly encouraged to continue to connect to the university’s secure wireless network, eduroam.
