Wireless Networks at UMass Amherst

Secure wireless for students, faculty, and staff
eduroam

eduroam is the encrypted wireless network at UMass Amherst.

Students, faculty, and staff should use this network for most devices, including laptops, smartphones & tablets.

Basic Instructions

  1. Go to umass.edu/it/eduroam.
    If you need wifi to get there, use the UMASS network temporarily.
  2. Download and run the eduroam setup app or wizard.
    You will be prompted for your NetID and password.

iPhone/iPad: You will need to install a configuration profile in Settings to finish connecting to eduroam. Detailed instructions

Wireless for select streaming devices & gaming consoles
UMASS-DEVICES

UMASS-DEVICES provides wireless for select streaming devices & gaming consoles (e.g. Apple TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch).

Basic Instructions

  1. On a computer or mobile device, go to devices.it.umass.edu.
    Log in with your NetID and password
  2. Fill out the form, and click Create Device.
  3. Connect your device to the UMASS-DEVICES network using the info listed on the New Device Registration page.
Wireless for Campus Guests
UMASS

UMASS is the unencrypted wireless network at UMass Amherst, for campus guests and event users, and for configuring eduroam if necessary.

Guest Wireless SMS Self-Registration

Starting Thursday, December 7, 2023, campus guests can self-register via SMS to get wireless access using the process below:

  1. Connect your device to the UMASS network and wait for the login page to appear.
    • If a login page does not automatically appear, open a web browser and go to umass.edu
  2. Under Guest Wireless Options, click Guest Self-Reg Form.
  3. Follow the steps to enter your cellphone number to receive a PIN via text message.
  4. Enter the PIN in the Access code box and accept the terms to get online.

Sponsored Guest Wireless Accounts

UMass Amherst students, faculty, and staff can create sponsored guest wireless accounts in SPIRE, which can be used for 3 days.
Devices may stay connected for up to 7 days after the account is logged into for the first time.

Sponsored Guest Wireless Accounts - Basic Instructions
  1. In SPIRE, use the Search bar at the top of the screen to go to Manage Guest Accounts.
  2. Enter a guest name and click Create guest account.
  3. On the Terms of use page, click I Agree.
  4. Take note of the Account Name so you can remember it.
  5. Click Set Account Password at My IT Accounts.
  6. Click the Account Name for the account you just created.
  7. Click Change Password and follow the instructions.
  8. Give your guest the account name and password, and a link to the IT Acceptable use policy.
