Award-winning journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro will join Alexander Theodoridis, associate professor of political science and co-director of the UMass Poll, for a conversation titled “Democracy at the Microphone” on Tuesday, Nov.18, from noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Bernie Dallas Room of Goodell Hall at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The event is free and open to the public.

The discussion will explore what Garcia-Navarro’s distinguished career—spanning her years at NPR and her current role hosting The New York Times’s flagship interview series, “The Interview”—has taught her about navigating conversations across political divides, fostering public trust and sustaining democratic values through plural storytelling.

Garcia-Navarro is a two-time Peabody Award-winning journalist with decades of experience reporting from around the world and interviewing leading figures in politics, culture and society. Her guests on “The Interview” have ranged from Vice President JD Vance to Miley Cyrus. Before joining The Times, Garcia-Navarro spent 17 years at NPR, serving as a longtime international correspondent in the Middle East and Latin America and later as host of Weekend Edition Sunday. She is also an on-air contributor to CNN.

This event is part of UMass Amherst’s Democracy in Troubled Times initiative, a campuswide effort featuring speakers and events focused on issues related to democracy in the U.S.
