Six UMass Amherst researchers representing a wide range of science disciplines have been recognized as among the world’s most highly cited researchers in 2024 by Clarivate Plc, a provider of data analytics.

Analysts at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) have recognized 6,636 Highly Cited Researchers in 2024 who rank in the top 1% by citations for their fields and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade. This year’s highly cited researchers span more than 1,200 institutions in 59 nations and regions and represent a diverse range of research fields in the sciences and social sciences. 

The highly cited UMass Amherst researchers demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field of research in 2024. Those listed include:

• Eric Decker, professor of food science
• Hang Xiao, professor and Clydesdale Scholar of Food Science
• Vincent Rotello, Distinguished Professor in Chemistry
• Muzaffer “Muzzo” Uysal, Carney Family Endowed Professor in hospitality and tourism management
• Qiangfei Xia, Dev and Linda Gupta Professor of electrical and computer engineering
• Leontine Alkema, professor of biostatistics and associate chair in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology

The U.S. ranks highest for the most highly cited researchers with 2,507 out of a total of 6,636 individuals. China Mainland continues to rank second, followed by the U.K. and Germany. Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, highly cited researchers are 1 in 1,000, according to Clarivate.

Clarivate noted its rigorous evaluation and selection process draws on data from the Web of Science Core Collection citation index, together with qualitative analysis performed by experts at the ISI at Clarivate. Prior to the launch of the 2024 list, Clarivate engaged with selected researchers in an extensive validation and feedback process to maintain the accuracy of the list.
