Graduate School Awards Over $400,000 in Research Grants, Dissertation Writing Fellowships During 2024-25

The Graduate School has announced that more than $400,000 in research grants and dissertation writing fellowships to graduate students were awarded during the 2024-25 academic year.
Dissertation Completion Fellowships were awarded to select students in the Colleges of Social and Behavioral Science, Humanities and Fine Arts, and Education to support summer dissertation writing. In addition to a summer stipend, Dissertation Completion Fellows participate in structured writing support over the summer to help advance their writing goals. The Graduate School funded 30 Summer Dissertation Completion Fellowships and SBS funded an additional three students.
“Providing a concentrated period of summer support with no other duties can be a game changer in helping students make progress and reach their final goal,” says Jacqueline Urla, dean of the Graduate School, who envisions the Dissertation Completion Fellowship as a critical tool to help students complete their dissertation.
The Graduate School also awarded Predissertation, Fieldwork, Rapid Research, and MFA Thesis grants, which provide funding for students to advance their doctoral or MFA thesis work. Supported projects include evaluating different models of pedestrian safety measures, examining changes in migration patterns for shorebirds, testing wastewater to measure the prevalence of communicable disease in a community and understanding how art can serve as a form of cultural justice.
