CURE Development Workshop Series to Empower Faculty to Transform Science Education

This fall, the UMass Success in Science project, supported by a grant from HHMI, will host a development workshop series designed to support faculty in increasing the number of students able to access Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs).

The series, which offers a unique opportunity for faculty to reimagine their courses and integrate authentic research experiences that engage students in scientific discovery, will kick off on Oct. 6, from 4-6 p.m. in the IALS Conference Center. Erin Dolan, a nationally recognized CURE specialist from the University of Georgia, will present a keynote address and share insights on the transformative impact of CUREs on student learning and faculty development. Following the keynote, a panel discussion moderated by Elizabeth Connor, associate dean for undergraduate education in the College of Natural Sciences, will feature UMass faculty who have successfully implemented CUREs in their classrooms.

The series will continue with hands-on workshops on Oct. 28 and Dec. 3, in Integrated Sciences Building Room 145.

Faculty attending these workshops will have the opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with peers across disciplines
  • Brainstorm course ideas
  • Access curated resources and tools
  • Receive feedback from experienced CURE practitioners
  • Build a strong proposal for funding

These workshops are designed to guide faculty through the process of developing their own CURE courses, with the ultimate goal of preparing strong proposals for funding.

Faculty participating in the series will be eligible to apply for a grant of up to $22,000, made available through the HHMI Driving Change/Success in Science initiative. Grant applications will open on Oct. 6 and close in January.
