12 UMass Amherst Students Named Fulbright Scholars

Twelve University of Massachusetts Amherst students have been awarded Fulbright grants for 2023-2024, reports the university’s Office of National Scholarship Advisement (ONSA).

The new cohort of Fulbright scholars will be teaching English or conducting research in South Korea, Moldova, Czech Republic, Brazil, Colombia, Taiwan, Spain, Ireland, Vietnam and Singapore.

"We are thrilled to see so many of our UMass Amherst students and alumni be honored as Fulbright scholars," says ONSA Director Madalina Akli. "We are now starting a new application cycle and hope that this news will inspire new applicants. The Fulbright application process requires a few months of drafting and re-drafting before the national deadline, but as we can see, all this is mission possible. We are looking forward, together with the faculty committee, to support and nominate competitive applicants again in the Fall."

The 2023-24 recipients of Fulbright Teaching Assistantships, their majors and their host countries are: 

Amrita Adak, individual concentration, biology; Commonwealth Honors College (CHC), South Korea 

Anna Shahbazyan, English, comparative literature; CHC, Moldova 

Emily Nguyen, communication disorders, Spanish, linguistics; Vietnam  

Kiara Batista, legal studies and Portuguese, CHC, Brazil 

Liam Lustberg, legal studies, CHC, Colombia 

Michael Redington, psychology, neuroscience; CHC, Taiwan 

Rafael De Pillis, biochemistry and molecular biology, CHC, Czech Republic 

Tiffany Huynh, English, comparative literature; CHC, Taiwan 

Yoojee Kim, Spanish, linguistics; CHC, Spain 

The 2023-24 recipients of Fulbright Research Awards, their majors and their host countries are: 

Julia Burke, biomedical engineering, mathematics; CHC, Ireland 

Renee Owen, biology, German and Scandinavian studies; CHC, Germany 

Tameah Chandler, doctoral candidate in education, international education concentration; education policy, research and administration; Taiwan

Two alternate finalists were also named: 

Sara MacManus, biochemistry and molecular biology, German and Scandinavian studies;  CHC, Germany  

Jordan Legaspi, doctoral candidate in psychology, Singapore 

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement as well as a record of service and leadership potential in their respective fields. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered at UMass Amherst through ONSA.
