February 11, 2024 Community

Content

Members of the MA State Employees’ Retirement System can request an estimate of their future pension from the MA Retirement Board. Members of the Optional Retirement Program work directly their ORP investment vendor (TIAA or Fidelity).

University and Commonwealth of Massachusetts providers and agencies that administer employment-retirement benefits and provide advice are:

  • TIAA & Fidelity (related to the Optional Retirement Program (ORP), UMass 403b and UMass GAP plans),
  • MA Department of Higher Education (for members of the ORP),
  • MA State Retirement Board (for members of the Massachusetts State Employees’ Retirement System / MSERS) as overseen by the Public Employees' Retirement Administration Commission (PERAC)
  • Empower Retirement (Massachusetts SMART/457b Plan).

In addition to the websites above, resources for information about UMass-related retirement plans include:

  • Re the Massachusetts State Employees’ Retirement System (MSERS, pension plan)
    • Monthly UMass Workplace Learning & Development “Retiring from the State Employees Retirement System” workshops
    • MA Retirement Board webinars
  • The UMass Amherst Thinking About Retirement website
  • To schedule an appointment with a Fidelity or TIAA representative
  • To contact the Massachusetts SMART/457(b) plan / Empower Retirement
  • MA Group Insurance Commission website

University employees have reported receiving retirement-related phishing and sales e-mails. Remain vigilant, verifying sender information, avoiding clicking on suspicious links, being cautious of urgency and threats, and refraining from sharing personal information, you can effectively protect yourself against retirement benefits phishing attempts. Make informed and considered decisions about who you engage as a retirement planner.
