HR Direct Sex Marker
Sex
UMass Amherst employees can designate their sex in HR Direct as female, male or X. UMass Human Resources does not require documentation of an employee's sex.
Benefited employees: the MA Group Insurance Commission (GIC) and their health insurance companies require a binary sex in their software systems. The GIC will contact you directly to obtain a binary sex if you indicate in HR Direct that your sex is X.
Legal sex
Legal sex refers to the sex marker on a person’s identification document/s (eg, birth certificate, driver’s license, state ID).
Massachusetts allows individuals to select X as the sex marker on their driver's licenses.
