Along the way we’ll cover tips, tricks, and strategies to utilize resources early and often to lead to a successful first semester!

Orientation and Transition is a multi-phase experience developed for new students to discover their place at UMass Amherst. The New Student and Family Programs team coordinates Next for the U, Guide to the U, Ready for the U, and Welcome to the U for new students and their families, as well as Family Weekend. Join our team, including staff and former orientation leaders, to learn more about navigating the new student experience and finding your path at UMass Amherst.

Making the final decision about College and Academic Success can be difficult. We offer the opportunity for you to learn why you should accept the invitation to join Commonwealth Honors College (CHC) at UMass Amherst, as your destination of choice for your undergraduate college experience. CHC Associate Dean Ann Marie Russell and CHC student ambassadors will present an overview of the benefits of our honors college including the curriculum, academic advising, student and faculty connections, and how we work with all UMass Amherst departments to ensure your overall success. CHC student ambassadors will highlight how they navigate and balance being an honors student. They will answer questions about classes, living and learning communities, innovative programs, research and professional opportunities, and everything that you should know about us. They have been where you are now. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to get your questions answered.

Tour the university’s award-winning Recreation Center, which provides comprehensive recreation, student development opportunities, and a wide range of programs, services, and facilities. Tours depart from the member services desk. Take-home materials will be available.

The UMass Amherst Makerspace is an interdisciplinary makerspace open to students, staff, and faculty from all majors and disciplines. We provide access to space, tools, equipment, training; help connect individuals; and facilitate mentorship and sharing of knowledge. The makerspace features a wood shop, machine shop, welding studio, sewing area, electronics lab, 3D printing zone, laser cutter, and more.

Dining Commons

Enjoy lunch at any of our four award-winning dining commons, ranked No. 1 Best Campus Food by The Princeton Review. Dine for a special price of $7 (children under 5 years old dine for free; children 5–12 years old dine for half price). Lunch tickets for dining commons can be purchased during morning registration or directly at the dining commons.

Visit the W. E. B. Du Bois Library, the tallest academic research library building in the world. Highlights of this building include the lower-level Learning Commons, the breathtaking views from the 23rd floor, the Digital Media Lab, and the W. E. B. Du Bois Center.

On the lower level, the Digital Media Lab provides UMass students, faculty, and staff access to production rooms, sound booths, audio/video equipment, and workstations; spaces and equipment for working with virtual and augmented reality software and hardware; and 3-D printing and scanning services and equipment, in addition to workshops, trainings, and consultations on digital media production.

On the 22nd floor, the W. E. B. Du Bois Center provides a space for students and members of our community to learn about the life, work and legacy of the man for whom the library is named through events, talks, reading groups, outreach and educational programs. Also housed in the Du Bois Library are several campus partners who help support student success such as the Writing Center, the Learning Resource Center, and the Assistive Technology Center.

Watch the UMass Minutemen take on the New Hampshire Wildcats at the Mullins Center on Saturday, February 22! Discounted general admission tickets are available through this link. Parking is available for free in Lots 12 and 25 on the north side of the Mullins Center and Community Ice Rink.

Visitor Info

Free parking is available in the Campus Center parking garage. (Levels 2 - 6). Cost is free for Destination Day visitors, and the garage is open 24/7. The Upper Garage entrance is located on Campus Center Way. Enter on Level 3 and exit on Level 4. Clearance is 7' 2". Please note, the parking garage has limited space and typically fills before 9:30 AM on event day. Follow the link in your confirmation email to register your vehicle for the garage.

 

Visitors may also park without a permit in any available non-restricted, non-reserved space or lot. For more information about planning your visit, traveling to campus, and parking at UMass:

Join us for a tour of UMass Equine and Livestock Research and Education Farm (aka The Hadley Farm) between 1:30-3:30 pm. Guided tours will leave from the main parking lot area every 30 minutes. This 130-acre farm is home to the Dorset sheep, Boer goats and horses used in our classes in pre-veterinary medical studies, veterinary technology and animal management. Spring is in the air and lambing and kidding season is just starting. Come learn about what we do!
