UMass Football Kicks Off 2023 Season Aug. 26 at New Mexico State
The 140th season of Massachusetts football kicks off against New Mexico State at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 26 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at Aggie Memorial Stadium in a “Week 0” game that will be broadcast on ESPN.

The UMass roster this season – the 12th FBS season for UMass and its eighth as an independent – features 25 student-athletes from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the Minutemen added four quarterbacks in the offseason, including redshirt junior transfer Taisun Phommachanh from Georgia Tech/Clemson and redshirt senior transfer Carlos Davis from Western Carolina.
A Bridgeport, Connecticut, native and former four-star recruit, Phommachanh appeared in two games for Georgia Tech last season and in 13 games for Clemson from 2019-21. Davis played in seven games for Western Carolina in 2022 while compiling a 149.59 passer rating, throwing for 16 touchdowns while also finishing as the team's third-leading rusher with 221 yards on the ground. Junior Brady Olson, a Bellingham, Massachusetts, native, is the team’s lone returning quarterback.
This season’s schedule features six games at McGuirk Stadium, with the home slate starting Sept. 9 vs. Miami University (Ohio) at 3:30 p.m. Other highlights this season include the annual Band Day game Oct. 7 versus Toledo, the Homecoming Game Nov. 4 versus Merrimack and Senior Day against UConn on Nov. 25.
