Stanford’s Jamil Zaki to Present ‘Finding Hope and Connection in Cynical Times’ for Week of Wellbeing

As part of the Week of Wellbeing, Jamil Zaki, professor of psychology at Stanford University and director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Lab, will present “Finding Hope and Connection in Cynical Times" from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Campus Center Auditorium.
Zaki and his colleagues study social connection, what that connection does for us, and how people can learn to connect more effectively. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and received more than two dozen awards from scientific associations and universities. In addition to his scientific work, Jamil has written about the psychology of connection for outlets including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Atlantic and Harvard Business Review. His first book, “The War for Kindness,” was described by NPR as a “wide-ranging, practical guide to making the world better,” and his second book, “Hope for Cynics,” was praised by Wharton professor and author Adam Grant as “a ray of light for dark times.”
A Q&A session will follow Zaki’s presentation, and the Office of Equity and Inclusion will be providing books for those interested in participating in a reading group on “Hope for Cynics.” Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first serve bases.
The Week of Wellbeing is a cross-campus collaboration, involving the Okanagan Wellbeing Collective, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, Student Affairs and Campus Life and many others.
