Spring 2022 Rising Researchers Named

Eight outstanding undergraduates have received the spring 2022 Rising Researcher awards. The Rising Researcher program celebrates students who excel in research, scholarship or creative activity.

In fields ranging from food science to chemical engineering, Middle Eastern politics to computer science, the Spring 2022 Rising Researchers found in themselves a tenacity to push through frustrations and setbacks. With support from their faculty mentors and research teams, they discovered how these unexpected moments in research often open new lines of inquiry and sometimes lead to the greatest breakthroughs.

UMass honors these eight students for challenging their intellect, contributing to research, and exercising their exceptional creativity.

The spring 2022 Rising Researchers were:

  • Kanon Kobata ’22, food science, BDIC, Commonwealth Honors College
  • Trevor Stearns ’22, political science and Middle Eastern studies, Commonwealth Honors College
  • Zeynep Alptekin ’23, chemical engineering
  • Adam Lechowicz ’22, computer science and political science, Commonwealth Honors College
  • Emily Leonard ’22, biology and public health, Commonwealth Honors College
  • Ryan Baker ’22, veterinary and animal sciences with a concentration in biotechnolog
  • Yue Zhu ’22, hospitality and tourism management
