

Six New UMPD Officers Sworn in; 3 Promoted
The UMass Amherst Police Department held an official swearing-in and badge-pinning ceremony for six new officers and celebrated the promotions of three veterans of the department at the Mullins Center on Monday, Aug. 25.

Words of welcome to the officers, their family members and friends were made by Deputy Chief of Operations Damian DeWolf and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs & Campus Life Shelly Perdomo-Ahmed. Opening remarks were made by Police Chief Tyrone Parham.
Celebrating recent promotions were Devin Mackey, Michael Williams and James Sullivan.
Mackey, who was hired as a police officer in the department in July 2017 and became a detective in February 2024, was promoted to the rank of sergeant. Devin has served as a defensive tactics instructor, firearms Instructor and member of the TAC Team. He had previously served the patrol membership as an officer of the NEPBA E-Board. Mackey graduated cum laude from Springfield College with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
Williams, who began his career at UMPD as a police cadet in 2003, became a communications dispatcher in 2006 and an officer in January 2007, was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Detective Bureau for nine years and was lead sexual assault investigator as well as a member of the Domestic Violence Task Force. Williams also served as a TAC team member and field training officer. He received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Westfield State University.
Sullivan began his career as an officer with UMPD in March 2008 and was promoted to sergeant in May 20217, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. During his time with the department, Sullivan has served as a field training officer, Citizens Police Academy staff instructor, residence liaison officer, on the TAC and Quality of Life teams and active in Mounted Patrol. He received his bachelor’s degree in mass communication/criminal justice from Westfield State, and his master’s degree in public policy and administration from UMass Amherst.

Karl-Heintz Alcide
Alcide was hired in October 2023 and attended the Holyoke Police Academy from October–March 2024. Prior to his hire, Alcide was a behavioral health specialist with the U.S. Army as well as a residential supervisor at Behavioral Health Network in Springfield. He received his bachelor’s degree in human performance from Southern Connecticut State University.
Garrett Antosz
Antosz joined the department in May 2024 and attended the Holyoke Police Academy from May–October of that year. Prior to that, he was a member of UMPD’s dispatch team since February 2023. Antosz received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Westfield State University.
Kyle Greene
Greene was hired on July 20, 2025 after serving as a full-time police officer with the Palmer Police Department for two-and-a-half years. He graduated from the Boylston Police Academy in December 2022 and received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Westfield State University.
Joseph Isabelle
Isabelle was hired in December 2023 after being a full-time officer for the City of Chicopee for more than three years, where he became a trained member of the Riot Control Team. Prior to his law enforcement career, he worked for the Amherst highway and water departments for seven years.
Fernando Montalban
Montalban was hired in May 2025 from the Worcester State University Police Department , where he had been a full-time police officer for two-and-a-half years. He also worked as a part-time officer for the Oakham Police Department in Oakham, Massachusetts. Montalban received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Worcester State University.
Bryan Williams
Williams was hired in April 2024. Prior to joining UMPD, he worked as a detective for the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office. He has also served as a police officer for the Hardwick and New Braintree Police Department. Williams received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Westfield State University.
