SBS and HFA to Host Virtual Panel Discussing Iran War on March 10
Scholars from UMass Amherst and Mount Holyoke College will examine the domestic and international consequences of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran during a virtual panel discussion on Tuesday, March 10.
The webinar, “War with Iran: International and Domestic Implications,” will take place at 4 p.m. on Zoom. The event is free and open to the public, though advance registration is required.
The panel will bring together experts to discuss the political, legal and humanitarian consequences of the expanding war in the Middle East. The conversation will explore the domestic stakes of military action taken without congressional authorization, as well as the broader global impacts of the conflict.
Participants will analyze questions surrounding the use of lethal force, the implications for international law and civilian protection, and how a war could reshape Iranian politics and civil society. The discussion will also consider potential ripple effects on U.S. foreign policy and global energy markets.
The panel will include:
- Charli Carpenter - Professor of political science at UMass Amherst, chair of the Five Colleges International Relations Consortium and director of the Human Security Lab
- Sohail Hashmi - Professor of international relations and politics at Mount Holyoke College
- David Mednicoff - Associate professor of Middle Eastern studies and public policy at UMass Amherst
The panel will be moderated by Jamie Rowen, professor of legal studies and political science at UMass Amherst and director of the Center for Justice, Law, and Societies.
More information on the event, which is sponsored by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and co-sponsored by the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, can be found on the SBS website.
