A portion of Eastman Lane on the UMass Amherst campus is temporarily closed to vehicle traffic to allow for needed repairs to a collapsed drainage culvert.

Effective May 21, Eastman Lane is closed to vehicle traffic between Sylvan Lot 44 and the intersection with East Pleasant Street. Detours for vehicles have been posted; Lots 44 and 47 remain accessible via North Pleasant Street and lower Eastman Lane.

The adjacent sidewalk also had to be removed and will be replaced with updated crosswalks and ADA-compliant detectable warning surfaces to assist pedestrians with vision impairments. A temporary sidewalk has been installed alongside the construction area for use by pedestrians during the construction.

PVTA Route 33 northbound and all Route 36 services are detoured in the area of Eastman Lane and Lot 44 in the Sylvan Residential area. These services will bypass the Eastman Lane at Sylvan Drive stops. Nearby services are available from either East Pleasant Street at Tilson Farm Road (UMPD police station) or North Pleasant Street at Arnold House (near Worcester Dining). For real-time updates on PVTA’s routes, including service changes, visit the UMass Transportation website, Transit - Transportation Services - UMass Amherst, or use the MyStop mobile app or website.

The tentative completion date for the repairs is Friday, May 31.
