Pasha Named 2018 Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow at Harvard
Shaheen Pasha, assistant professor of journalism, has been named a 2018 Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow at Harvard, where she will research prison education programs across the country.
Her goal is to create an immersive teaching and reporting model for university journalism programs to partner with prisons in creating a journalism curriculum for inmates.
Pasha, along with colleague Razvan Sibii, launched Social Justice Journalism: Mass Incarceration in the fall 2017 semester. The advanced writing course brought together 17 UMass Amherst journalism majors and 10 incarcerated students at Hampshire County Jail to report and write explanatory journalistic articles on mass incarceration.
The immersive model of the class is being used as a foundation for her research as a Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow.
