Muscle Physiology Lab Seeking Volunteers for Study on Insulin Resistance

The Muscle Physiology Lab in the Department of Kinesiology is seeking volunteers for a research study investigating the potential causes of insulin resistance. Researchers are seeking healthy adults who are relatively inactive, ages 23-40 years and 65-80 years, who can travel to campus for three compensated visits at Totman or the Life Science Laboratory.
For the first visit, volunteers will be asked to read and sign an informed consent document, complete an oral glucose tolerance test, a physical performance test, a VO2 peak test on a treadmill and wear an activity tracker for 10 days.
On the second visit, volunteers will lie in the magnetic resonance scanner while researchers collect data in a resting state and complete muscle contractions. The third visit will involve a 30-minute treadmill walk. During both visits, oxygen consumption will be measured.
Prior to each visit, volunteers will be asked to abstain from alcohol and exercise for 24 hours and food for eight hours, and caffeine the day of the visit. Researchers will also request volunteers to complete a diet log each day for three days prior to the second and third visits.
Older adults will need to obtain clearance from their healthcare provider prior to their first visit. Volunteers will receive $40 each visit for completing the first and second visit completing and $30 for the third visit.
