Memorial Service for Frederick Harris to be Held Oct. 2

A memorial service for Frederick Harris will be held on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Young Men’s Club in Hadley. The ceremony will begin at noon, followed by a barbeque from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Born Sept. 13, 1949, in Amherst, Mass., Harris died on March 25, 2020, due to complications from COVID-19.

Harris, known by many on campus as “Fred” or “Rick,” worked for various departments at UMass Amherst, including physical plant and mail services, for nearly four decades.

According to friends and family, Harris was not only a Boston sports fan but an avid supporter of the UMass basketball team, befriending coaches and sitting with the team on the bench.
