The 2023 Sir Harold W. Kroto and Steve F.A. Acquah GEOSET (Global Educational Outreach for Science Engineering and Technology) Award has been given to Maeve Tucker ’25, an undergraduate student in biochemistry and molecular biology who created a website dedicated to building awareness of diabetes, designed as a resource for teens. The award was presented at the annual Chemistry Senior and Awards Dinner on May 12.

The award was established by Steve Acquah, digital media coordinator and associate research professor of chemistry, to continue the legacy research and outreach for the late Nobel Laureate Sir Harold Kroto. It is given each year to a student in the College of Natural Sciences who has demonstrated excellence in science communication through digital media.

“I am extremely grateful to have received this exceptional award,” Maeve says. “I hope that my website helps to raise awareness about diabetes.”

The significance of science communication through digital media is underscored by this award, helping to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding,” says Acquah.

The award also includes $200 and the recipient's name on a perpetual plaque displayed in the Department of Chemistry.
