Journalist Palagummi Sainath to Discuss India’s Struggle for Independence Nov. 7

Journalist and author Palagummi Sainath will visit campus Tuesday, Nov. 7 to discuss his latest book, “The Last Heroes: Foot Soldiers of Indian Freedom,” at 5 p.m. in the third-floor conference room of Gordon Hall.
“The Last Heroes” is about the last living fighters in India’s struggle for Independence. It shares the often-overlooked stories of 15 ordinary Indians who, along with millions of others, fought against the British Raj in courageous ways without personal gain.
A journalist and reporter for over four decades, Sainath has covered rural India for over 30 years, winning over 60 national and international reporting awards, and has been teaching journalism for over three decades. He is also founder-editor of the People’s Archive of Rural India (PARI), a multimedia digital platform that covers every region and section of rural people in 15 languages. In seven years, PARI has won over 50 journalism awards.
This event is sponsored by the Political Economy Research Institute Asian Political Economy Program, the Department of Economics and the Five College Consortium.
