Journalism Student Matt Berg Leads Byline on Article About Recent Winter Storm for The New York Times, Selected as POLITICO Breaking News Summer Intern
Senior journalism major Matt Berg was the lead reporter for an article in The New York Times about the major snowstorm the struck Eastern Massachusetts Jan. 30-31.
“Twenty miles south of Boston, homeowners took to their driveways on Sunday morning with shovels, snowblowers and a little civic pride,” reads the article’s lede. “Excavating cars that could hardly be seen under mountainous piles of dense snow, Stoughton residents faced the chilly task of digging out from a record-breaking winter storm, but at least they had some bragging rights.
Stoughton saw the most snowfall — 30.9 inches — of any city or town in the Northeast during the storm, according to the National Weather Service.”
Berg, who works as a stringer for the Times and serves as a part-time digital producer for the opinion section of “The Boston Globe,” has also been selected as POLITICO’s breaking news intern for summer 2022. The nationally-competitive internship is much sought after, as the breaking news unit takes only one intern per summer.
Fellow journalism senior Sophia Gardner has also been selected for a competitive POLITICO program, the POLITICO Journalism Institute (PJI). Only 15 undergraduate and graduate students from across the country are selected for this “intensive training program designed to advance newsroom diversity . . . at the largest politics- and policy-focused newsroom in the nation.”
Programming for PJI includes interactive workshops, sessions with industry leaders and mentor pairings. It also takes participants behind the scenes in the historic places where national stories are covered, including the White House, Congress, and the National Press Club. Participants split time between the POLITICO newsroom in Arlington, Va., and the nearby campus of American University, where they also are provided housing. All costs including housing, meals and transportation are covered by POLITICO.
Gardner is the head news editor for “The Massachusetts Daily Collegian” and is working as an editorial intern at FRONTLINE, the investigative documentaries program produced by WGBH Boston and distributed nationally by PBS.
