Jayati Ghosh Named to Jubilee Commission to Address Debt and Development in Southern Hemisphere

Jayati Ghosh, professor of economics, has been named to a Commission of Experts assembled by the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and Columbia University’s Initiative for Policy Dialogue to address the growing sovereign debt and development crises that are affecting countries across the Southern Hemisphere.
The commission will bring together global experts on sovereign debt from academia, civil society and religious communities to develop reforms to help nations burdened by unsustainable debt and guard against similar situations in the future, while promoting sustainable economic, social and environmental development.
Ghosh is one of India’s best-known economists with a wide range of research interests, including globalization, international trade and finance, employment patterns in developing countries, and macroeconomic policy. She has authored or edited 21 books and more than 220 scholarly articles, and writes regularly for popular media including newspapers, journals and blogs.
The commission is part of the Year of the Jubilee, a once-every-25-year occasion designated by the Catholic Church.
