College of Education Offering Free Nia Classes this Fall
The College of Education is hosting free nia classes for the university community this fall in Furcolo Hall.
Students, faculty and staff members all have work demands that require sitting for long stretches of time—in many cases, in isolation from each other. Nia is a movement practice that encourages participants to discover, explore, and enhance their potential by engaging their senses and listening to their bodies. This non-impact practice is based on the idea that health and community can be found through movement, combining practices and philosophies from martial arts, dance arts, yoga and other healing arts.
Nia is practiced barefoot in a group and set to diverse music from around the world. It is non-impact and adaptable to all individual needs and abilities. Participants wear loose-fitting clothes.
Alice Heller, an experienced local instructor, will demonstrate and accommodate all intensity levels. All are welcome to participate.
The sessions are sponsored by the 2026-27 Campus Climate Improvement Grant of the Office for Equity & Inclusion, the Language, Literacy & Culture Faculty and Student Advisory Committee, the Department of Teacher Education & Curriculum Studies and the College of Education.
