Charmaine Nelson's Online Magazine Black Maple Awarded
Charmaine A. Nelson, provost professor of art history and founding director of the Slavery North Initiative, has announced her online publication, Black Maple Magazine, received nine gold and silver honors at the 20th annual Davey Awards presented last fall by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts.
Nelson is founder and editor-in-chief of Black Maple, one of the first and only magazines directed at Black Canadians. Launched in December 2022, the online publication features pop culture, self care and feature articles alongside interviews and academic research on trans-Atlantic slavery.
In November 2024, the magazine received gold and silver awards in the following categories:
- Features-Best Visual Appeal–Aesthetic
- General Health and Health Services
- Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
And in the General categories:
- Community
- Magazine
- Social Good
- Education
- Blog
Black Maple also won five gold and silver honors at the 20th annual w3 Awards in the community, health, magazine, entertainment and education categories.
These award announcements come on the heels of another recent honor for Nelson, who was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Universities Art Association of Canada in October.
