Anna Nagurney Co-edits New Book on Disaster Management Research

Anna Nagurney, the Eugene M. Isenberg Chair in Integrative Studies at the Isenberg School of Management, has co-edited the new volume, “Dynamics of Disasters: From Natural Phenomena to Human Activity,” recently published by Springer Nature.
The 250-plus page book, part of the Springer Optimization and Its Applications book series, is a collection of 10 refereed chapters based on research papers presented at the Dynamics of Disasters conference that Nagurney co-organized in Piraeus, Greece in July 2023.
Contributing editors include researchers and practitioners from the U.S., Germany, Greece, Italy, Nepal, Russia, Spain and Ukraine, who share their latest discoveries on disasters either caused by natural phenomena or human activities. It also includes additional invited manuscripts from other experts and leaders in the field.
The authors provide overviews of the tactical points involved in disaster relief, outlines of hurdles from mitigation and preparedness to response and recovery and uses for mathematical models to describe disasters and their impacts. Various methodological tools are described for disaster management including optimization, network analysis and machine learning.
The chapter, “Quantification of International Trade Network Performance Under Disruptions to Supply, Transportation, and Demand Capacity, and Exchange Rates in Disasters,” is co-authored by Nagurney, Isenberg doctoral student Dana Hassani and colleagues at the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), Oleg Nivievskyi and Pavlo Martyshev, who is a virtual scholar supported in part through the UMass Amherst KSE partnership.
