Important tax filing information for Nonresident Aliens

Social Security Number

Note that you cannot file your taxes without a Social Security number. The Global Affairs webpage provide helpful information on how to apply for a Social Security Number. Once you receive your Social Security Card, please bring it along with your photo ID to the UMass Amherst Human Resources Employee Service Center (168 Whitmore). We will assist you in requesting a corrected W-2 for tax filing purposes.

Key Tax Filing Dates

  • April 15, 2026 is the due date for filing 2025 tax returns. If you cannot meet this deadline you must file for an extension.
  • 1042-S forms (if applicable) are available online in 2025 Sprintax Calculus in mid-to-late February 2026.
  • The UMass Treasurer’s Office will email everyone with a 1042S with important information and links, please watch for this email.
  • W-2 forms are available in HR Direct by February 2, 2026: www.umass.edu/hr.

Sprintax offers free open webinars throughout the tax season. In these tax webinars, international students, scholars and professionals will be provided important information about nonresident tax filing. Topics will include who must file, tax residency, FICA, state income tax returns, implications of misfiling as well as how to use Sprintax to prepare a compliant tax return.
