Turning 65, Medicare, and Health Insurance
The MA Group Insurance Commission (GIC) does not require benefited employees (or Medicare-eligible dependents who are covered under GIC health insurance) to enroll in Medicare until retirement.
Upon retirement, if an individual wishes to continue GIC health insurance and is eligible for Medicare Part A at no cost, they must enroll in Medicare Parts A and B in order to continue health insurance coverage through the GIC. This process applies to the retiree and any Medicare-eligible dependents the retiree wishes to cover under their GIC health insurance after retirement. At that juncture, the GIC will offer a Medicare supplement plan at the retiree rate. Reference the Retirement and Thinking about Retirement page for more information.
Please refer to the GIC's Turning 65 page for detailed information.
